The oxidizing action exerted by ozone has meant that since its discovery it has been used as a bactericidal, fungicidal and virus-inactivating agent. The choice of ozone was based on the fact that 

it is more effective than other disinfectants toward a broader spectrum of microorganisms.

Inactivation of viruses occurs rapidly following ozonation, although it requires administration of gas at higher concentrations than is necessary for bacteria. Indicative times for the elimination of some pathogens are given in the table.

The Italian Ministry of Health recognizes ozone as a "natural remedy for the sterilization of environments contaminated by bacteria, viruses, spores, etc." (Protocol No. 24482 of 31/07/1996)
